I’m under the impression they did it out of 1) laziness and 2) Benedict Cumberbatch is a hot name right now, bound to attract lots of teenage girls that otherwise wouldn’t be watching. It seems like nothing more than people letting dollar signs trump not being giant assholes. “But he’s so talented,” my ass.I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they did it because they made such a big deal out of keeping his TRUE IDENTITY a secret until opening day and figured if they cast an Indian actor everyone would figure it out right away, without taking a step back and realizing that’s a really shitty way to cast a movie.
Trying to keep his identity a secret was a stupid move. Not only because it was a futile effort to maintain the mystery before release, but it’s bad marketing. People don’t want some mysterious unknown, they want Khan. (Wanted, at least.) The sooner they know it’s Khan, the more time they have to be excited and prepare to throw money. It’s not like he was the Star Trek equivalent to Thanos.
